11:00 Sunday School

“How the Methodist Church Came to Be” is the subject of a four-week course starting Sunday,

April 15, from 11:00 a.m. until 12 noon.  Topics include the Protestant Reformation, the story of John Wesley and the Methodist movement in England, the coming of Methodism to America, and the rise of the Methodist Church in the United States. A special focus is the work of “backwoods” preachers such as the famous Peter Cartwright, a long-time resident of Pleasant Plains and political rival of Abraham Lincoln.

The teacher is David Scott, a member of this church’s Christian Perspectives adult Sunday morning class and past president of both the Illinois and Sangamon County historical societies. Those with little background knowledge as well as those with a general knowledge of church history will find the course informative. There will be sign-up sheet in the atrium, but it is not required that you sign-up in order to attend. Contact: Carli Burton, 793-9760×121 or cburton@springfieldfirst.org.
