About Us
Our mission at First United Methodist Church is very simple: To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
We believe people really do want to experience God and change the world. In a culture dominated by materialism and entertainment, many people are seeking something beyond themselves. Like us, they are looking for a deeper peace, an unshakeable faith, a brighter joy, an unquenchable hope, and an amazing love. First United Methodist Church strives to be a place where people are encouraged to hear God’s voice, love one another, show compassion to others, and follow Jesus more closely than ever before. Our desire as a congregation is to pour forth God’s love in every direction so our local and global community can be transformed. Specifically, we want to help the lost ones be found, the children be loved, the broken be healed, the races be reconciled and the poor be lifted up. It would be an honor to have you join us in this world changing business.
We are excited about the ways we are engaging the next generation and this one in both faith and action. Some examples are listed here.
- More than 100 youth (grades 5 – 12) are currently participating in our youth groups.
- More than 100 youth and adults are involved in our scouting program.
- More than 200 people participate in our 7 choirs for ages Kindergarten through adult and our worship band.
- More than 200 adults participate in support groups, Bible studies, and other adult ministries.
- Many people are involved in ministries of compassion to under resourced people in our community and around the world (See Missions).
- We gave away over $250,000 to people in need both locally and globally in 2008
Our Core Values
- God’s Heart: For God so loved the world He gave his only Son for us (John 3:16). Because spiritual seekers matter to God, they matter to us.
- Prayer: By teaching and example, Jesus showed how personal prayer is the key to spiritual and social renewal (Luke 5:16).
- Community: Jesus said, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I will be there also” (Matthew 18:20). That’s why life-change happens best in a small group.
- Servanthood: Jesus came not to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45). In His body, every member of Christ is a minister of Christ.
- Compassion: The church exists for those who are not a part of it. We are the hands and feet of Jesus to bring healing, justice and hope to those who have none (Matthew 25:31-46).
- Authenticity: God lives in reality and meets us in our brokenness. To meet God, we must be real about our lives and our relationships with God, others and ourselves (Mark 10:51).
We Believe
- There is one God eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.(2 Corinthians 13:14)
- Jesus Christ is the one and only Son of God who died for our sins and rose from the dead.(I Corinthians 15:1-8)
- The Bible is the inspired word of God, a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path, and contains all things necessary for salvation. (2 Timothy 3:16, Psalm 119:105)
- Every person has worth as a creation of God, but all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)
- All persons experience a saving relationship with God as we turn away from sin, confess our faith in Jesus Christ and trust in his all-sufficient work on the cross.(Romans 6:23 & 10:9, John 14:6)
- Baptism and communion are the two channels of God’s grace instituted by Jesus Christ and celebrated as sacraments in the church.(Acts 2:38, Matthew 26:26-29)
- Forgiveness of sins, wholeness, and the promise of eternal life are available to all those who trust Jesus Christ as their Forgiver and Leader. (Matthew 9:5-7, John 3:16-17)
- The church is the body of Christ on earth, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and it exists to lead spiritually adrift people to faith, edify believers, and be the hands and feet of Jesus in this world.(Ephesians 4:1-16)
- Jesus Christ will one day return to earth and reign forever as King of kings and Lord of Lords. (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
